Limited Registration Vs. Full Registration

You may be surprised to know that many people do not fully understand exactly what it means to have limited or full registration. I want to clarify this for you. It is important to understand what you are getting when you purchase a puppy!

Limited Registration

Limited Registration means that the dog is registered but no litters produced by that dog are eligible for registration.

No offspring of a dog for which has been granted is eligible for registration. This option is perfect for a person looking for a pet, service animal, or not looking to breed. Each registration certificate for such dog shall carry notice of the limitation, and the limitation shall continue, regardless of any change of ownership, unless and until the owner(s) of the litter at birth shall apply to AKC for removal of the limitation.”

A dog registered with an AKC Limited Registration shall be ineligible to be entered in a breed competition in a licensed or member dog show. It is eligible, however, to be entered in any other licensed or member event. These events include: Obedience, Rally, Agility, Tracking, Field Trials, Hunting Tests, Herding, Lure Coursing, Earthdog, Fast Cat, CAT, Scentwork, Junior Showmanship, Trick Dog and CGC.

Limited Registration is determined by the litter owner(s). The litter owner(s) check the Limited box on the AKC Dog Registration Application.

Limited Registration certificates are white with an orange border; the Full Registration certificate is white with a purple border.

Limited Registration can be changed to Full Registration only by the litter owner(s). The litter owner(s) will need to obtain the Application to Revoke Limited Status. That form will then need to be completed and sent to the Raleigh address with the processing fee. After processing, AKC will send a Full Registration certificate to the dog’s owner.

Limited Registration helps breeders protect their breeding programs. If breeders do not want puppies used for breeding purposes, they can request the option for those puppies.

The American Kennel Club does not license or endorse anyone engaged in the commerce of selling purebred dogs and, therefore, has no control over the business practices of those involved in such transactions. Membership in the American Kennel Club is comprised of independent dog clubs located throughout the United States. No individual persons are members of the AKC.

The AKC will not become involved in disputes concerning ‘full’ or ‘limited’ registration of a dog. These disputes must be resolved by the parties involved in the sale of the dog.

Full Registration

For the American Kennel Club, full registration is a registration certificate for owners who breed stock dogs and or dogs that are actively participating in dog shows. Full registration is required only by the breeders. Therefore, dog owners who are not actively involved in dog breeding or participating in dog shows do not need to worry about having a full registration certificate. It is the owners decision to offer limited or full registration with their litters. Each breeder has their own requirements, rules, and prices for their breeding program. If you receive a full registration certificate you may breed your dog and register the litter produced by said dog, with AKC. Full Registration certificates are white with a purple border.

Creasman Canine's ONLY OFFERS Limited Registration to every puppy buyer (Doberman or Dalmatian). However, we will CONSIDER Full Registration should you request it. This will only be given if we deem fit to do so, and you meet our expectations/requirements. This will be based on several different factors.

Please note: Full Registration costs extra.

We offer registration papers with every puppy, even if you do not desire to have them. By registering your dog, this will show that ownership has been transferred to you and that the dog lives with you (not me). This also shows proof of where the dog came from. We encourage you to fill out the registration application given at the time of sell, or go online to complete the application process, so that the dog can be put in your name and registered to you as the new owner. If you need assistance with this process, you may contact us within reasonable hours and we can help you.
